Like porcelain from China is widely known as „china”, lacquer from Japan is often referred to as „japonica” in English. The Japanese, however, call lacquer urushi, and in many European languages the idiom „lac” stands for lacquer. The latter comes as an alternative of the already familiar shiny coating „shellac” from the Middle East for this new phenomenon.
